To arrive at their results, the researchers examined data from 122,007 patients who ran treadmill tests at the Cleveland Clinic between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 2014 to measure overall mortality related to the benefits of exercise and fitness.
As CNN reports, the benefits of exercise have been seen across all ages and genders, "probably a little more pronounced in women," said Jaber.

According to the researchers, study participants who hardly moved were five times more likely to die during the study period. With mediocre fitness, the probability of death was still one and a half times as high.

In addition, the study showed that the concern that "ultra" exercisers could have a higher risk of death is unjustified.
"There is no level of exercise or fitness that puts you at risk," says Jaber. "We can see from the study that the super athletes still have a lower mortality rate."
