This bamboo tableware should no longer be used

As TEDI GmbH & Co. KG recently announced, increased amounts of toxic formaldehyde were found in various bamboo plates, bowls and drinking cups as part of product tests. Formaldehyde can have harmful effects on health. The company therefore advises against the further use of these articles.

According to the TEDI quality management, the tableware articles were sold in more than 2,000 branches throughout Germany from October 5, 2018 to January 9, 2019. The selling prices were between 1.25 euros and 1.50 euros. Consumers can exchange the affected articles for a refund of the sales price or for another article in all TEDI branches. The following articles will be recalled:

  • Bamboo plate 25 centimeters design 1 and 2; Article numbers: 19344003431000000150 and 18128003431000000150
  • Bamboo bowl 14 centimeters design 1 and 2; Article numbers: 80336003431000000125 and 76469003431000000125
  • Bamboo mug 13 centimeters design 1 and 2; Item numbers: 98010003431000000125 and 98803003431000000125

What are the health effects of formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde has been considered a carcinogenic substance (Category 1 B) since June 2014. As the Federal Environment Agency reports, it is often used as an adhesive component in wood-based materials. Formaldehyde can be released into the air and inhaled. Higher formaldehyde concentrations can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes. In the worst case, carcinogenic processes are triggered. In addition, formaldehyde is suspected of triggering or intensifying asthma. The Federal Environment Agency recommends keeping the formaldehyde concentration in the room air as low as possible. (vb)
