Hartz IV is colloquially referred to as unemployment benefit II, the so-called basic service. It is a social benefit according to the second social code and is intended to enable working recipients to live a “decent” life. The agency responsible for the service is the Federal Employment Agency and the municipalities as municipal agencies.
Anyone who has reached the age of 15, lives in the Federal Republic of Germany and is not unable to work due to illness or disability is deemed to be able to work at least three hours a day. The amount of the remuneration depends on the need, the standard benefit (as of February 2019) is currently 424 euros.
