The abbreviation "PKV" is generally understood to mean private health insurance. This can also be taken out in addition to the statutory health insurance (for additional benefits) or - for employees whose income is above the annual salary limit (JAEG), the self-employed and civil servants - is chosen instead of the statutory insurance. While membership of a statutory health insurance fund comes into force by law, membership in a private insurance company is based on a private law contract. The PKVs are private law companies (mostly stock corporations) and thus also bound to company and insurance rights.

In contrast to the membership fees in the statutory health insurance companies, the contributions in the private health insurance companies are independent of income. They depend on the desired benefits, the age and the state of health of the insured. The benefits in the statutory insurance are largely uniform, those of the private insurance partly go far beyond that (chief doctor's treatment, single room, etc.). For this there is family protection in the statutory health insurance companies, with private ones a separate contribution has to be paid for each (new) family member.
