Should we eat eggs every day?

In recent years, there have been more and more contradictory statements about whether and how much egg people should eat daily and whether consuming eggs leads to increased cholesterol levels. A US research team has now found that eggs appear to increase the risk of heart disease.

Eggs are a major source of cholesterol

Are eggs healthy for humans or rather unhealthy? This debate is now fueled by the results of the current study. Cholesterol is a common nutrient in human nutrition and eggs are one of the main sources of cholesterol.

Data from over 29,000 subjects were evaluated for study

The study included data from 29,615 subjects who were collected between March 25, 1985 and August 31, 2016. The researchers investigated the relationship between dietary cholesterol (mg / day) and egg consumption (number / day), along with the likelihood of subjects suffering from a cardiovascular event or dying within the period of the study.

What was the effect of eating eggs?

The results showed that every 300 mg increase in cholesterol intake per day was associated with a 3.24 percent higher risk of a cardiovascular event and a 4.43 percent higher chance of dying within the study period. The analysis also showed that for every additional half of an egg consumed per day, the probability of a cardiovascular event increased by 1.11 percent and the risk of premature death by 1.93 percent. The connection between egg consumption and an increased risk of heart disease remained after taking factors such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, level of education, personal habits such as smoking or alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass indices (BMI), blood pressure, Lipid levels and existing medical conditions exist. However, results from another recent study with half a million Chinese adults published in the English-language journal Heart showed that moderate egg consumption (up to one egg per day) was significantly associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

Eggs contain many healthy ingredients

It should be borne in mind that while these large population-based studies show a connection or correlation, they do not confirm cause and effect, the US research team explains. A large egg contains about 186 mg cholesterol when it is completely consumed (protein plus egg yolk), this not insignificant amount should not be underestimated. The protein it contains is also an excellent source of protein. Eggs are low in calories and contain many micronutrients such as vitamin D, choline, lutein and zeaxanthin.
