Danger of botulism: eating fish can lead to life-threatening poisoning

The company Ocean GmbH strongly warns against the consumption of dried fish. According to the company, it cannot be ruled out that eating the fish will trigger life-threatening poisoning botulism.

Company warns of eating dried fish

Ocean Fischgroßhandel GmbH from Ostercappeln, Lower Saxony, warns against the consumption of dried fish of the species "roach without exception, except crucian carp, perch, trout, pike, all dried and salted". "It cannot be ruled out that eating dried fish in humans can trigger life-threatening poisoning botulism," the company wrote in a message published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety on its portal "".

Botulism needs to be treated promptly

"Botulism is a life-threatening poisoning that can be caused by eating spoiled meat or fish," explains the Lower Saxony Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection on its website.

“The trigger is the toxin botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In any case, botulism must be treated immediately, otherwise it can lead to death, ”it continues.

The current warning is due to the illness of a patient in the Lippe district, for whom the poison in the blood had been detected.

The dried fish consumed by the patient, in which the pathogen was detected, comes from a supermarket that purchased the goods from Ozean GmbH.

However, it was not possible to determine in more detail what type of fish the affected patient ate. As a precaution, the company therefore warns against the consumption of all dried fish that were delivered to the market in which the patient made purchases.
