Health check: Minister of Health calls young people for preventive care

Bavaria's Minister of Health wants more young people to provide for their health during puberty. Teenagers should take health checks to identify and treat undesirable developments and illnesses.

Do not miss a check-up

Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml (CSU) calls on teenagers and their parents not to miss the “J1” check-up for young people between the ages of 12 and 14. "Checking for physical and mental health is an important tool for identifying and treating undesirable developments and illnesses during puberty," the minister said in a statement.

Costs are borne by the health insurance companies

"The J1 adolescent health check-up examines height, weight, blood pressure and vaccination status, among other things, and provides advice on physical, mental and social development issues," explained Huml.

“For example, poor posture, eating disorders or chronic illnesses can be diagnosed and treated at an early stage. This opportunity should be used. The statutory health insurance companies bear the costs for this check-up. "

The J1 examination supplements the ten preventive examinations ("U-examinations") that take place within the first six years of a child's life. It has been a cash benefit since 1998.

Body still changes a lot

"While the U-examinations achieved very good participation rates - on average 97 percent - there is still a need for improvement in the J1 youth health examination," emphasized the minister.

According to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, only around 40 percent of young people in Bavaria used this service in 2014.

“Our goal must be that more girls and boys between 12 and 14 years of age take advantage of this health check. Because just at the beginning of puberty, the body changes a lot. And there are a lot of health issues that move young people around this age, ”says Huml.

Young people can decide whether parents are there

"The young people can decide for themselves whether their parents should take part in the examination or not," said the politician.

"The doctor is obliged to maintain confidentiality. In a confidential conversation, he can clarify and advise on all questions that are important for adolescent health - for example, skin problems, dealing with alcohol and smoking, questions about sexuality or difficulties in family, school or friends. ”( ad)
