Compensate for the lack of minerals

As the consumer center in Bremen explains in a message, alcohol causes, among other things, water and mineral deprivation in the body.

“The lack of minerals can be compensated for by the often salty anti-hangover remedies such as matjes or pickles. But they don't help against the hangover itself, i.e. headache, nausea and dizziness, ”explains Sonja Pannenbecker, nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center.

The uncomfortable symptoms are triggered by the breakdown of the alcohol. In addition, the alcohol irritates the stomach lining and dilates the blood vessels - also in the brain. The more extreme the resulting loss of fluid, the more severe the headache the next day.

Avoid hangovers

Sonja Pannenbecker also sees it this way: “The best tip is to drink a lot! Best water or juice spritzers. Herbal teas are also a good choice because it soothes the stomach, ”recommends the nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center.

The famous Bloody Mary made from tomato juice, lemon juice, salt and Tabasco also supplies important minerals. It is better to avoid vodka. “But a normal breakfast can also help to bring the mineral balance back into balance. Whole grain bread with cheese or sausage provides salt and other important minerals, ”recommends Pannenbecker.

After breakfast, exercise is good. A walk in the fresh air gets the circulation going and thus supports the alcohol breakdown process. Espresso with lemon is also recommended. This mix helps to break down alcohol and is a well-tried home remedy for headaches.

"Various dietary supplements advertise to prevent or relieve the hangover, but caution is required here," says Pannenbecker.
